John Teschner of Chicago, Illinois

Oct 28, 2011

John Teschner and Carolina Kätz married in Germany and immigrated to the United States with at least three of their six children.  The names of two of those children have yet to be determined.  The 1900 census says that the family arrived in 1878, but none of them have been found in the 1880 census.  John was a blacksmith and his name appears in a Chicago City Directory for the first time in 1890 as the owner of Hundt & Teschner at 4513 Wentworth Street and living at 4505 Wentworth in Chicago.  Three others named Teschner lived on Wentworth in 1890–John’s son Otto Teschner (barber), who also lived at 4505 Wentwoth, Gustavus Teschner (molder) who lived at 4521 Wentworth and Herman Teschner (wagon maker) at 4517 Wentworth.

While researching my own Teschner family, I recently found a Johann Teschner born 8 Jul 1845 in Klein Brunau, West Prussia, and baptized on 20 Jul in the Evangelisch church in Rosenberg, West Prussia (now Susz, Poland). This Johann Teschner was the son of Gottfried Teschner and Elisabeth Thimm, who were married in the nearby town of Gross Albrechtau (the records are microfilmed with the Finckenstein records) on 22 Sep 1835. Gottfried Teschner’s sister Louise was my third-great grandmother who came to Cleveland, Ohio.

I am not certain that my Johann Teschner is identical with your John Teschner, but I think the near-perfect coincidence of birth date and father’s name is quite suggestive and would bear further investigation. I will check the Rosenberg records next week to see if I can find further information about my Johann Teschner’s marriage.
